Here’s a preview of some of the things we are working on this week for Bay Ward & Ottawa residents….
Each weekday starts around 8am with several e-mail updates to review. Our staff deliver a news brief that covers issues raised in the media, we receive an update on city wide issues from corporate communications and review any overnight events that took place in any incident e-mails from City & Emergency staff. Monday's are usually meeting days and this is no exception. Our office staff have a meeting to discuss community issues and constituent cases they are working on, I meet with our team individually through the day to catch up on tasks and timelines. We have a media interview scheduled for mid-day where I will be sharing my thoughts on the violence two of our neighbourhoods saw last week and where we go from here. Later in the afternoon I will be meeting with Ecology Ottawa on the environment then City staff on Arts and later Childcare issues. With no evening commitments I have the night for family & homework after reviewing the daily mobility update sent to Councillor's that gives an overview of how traffic & transit flowed during the day across Ottawa. As much of our city's roads and transportation network are being renewed its important we keep goods, services & residents moving.
As a United Way Ottawa board member there is always one Tuesday that starts early each month and this is it. There are never enough hours in the day to do good work so the United Way gets to work early with a 7am board meeting where we hear updates and make decisions on the important funding, collaboration and capacity building the agency does. 9:30am is the beginning of our Nominating Committee meeting where Councillors names are put forward to serve on the many important standing and sub-committees of Council as well as other boards and bodies where the City appoints a representative. Names put forward will go to Wednesday's Council meeting. At noon I have our weekly staff meeting with our entire team, this is where we review the week, month & quarter goals, work plan and progress. Tuesday night I will be attending the Belltown Neighbours Association Annual General Meeting and just prior the RVCA open house on the Flood Mapping project for our community that I initiated last year.
Wednesday is a Council day so we reserve the whole day to ensure we have plenty of time for me to fulfill one of my most important roles - representing the residents of Bay Ward at Council. Time after the meeting is used for follow up items, writing & calling constituents.
Thursday there is lots going on. Although I will be in a constituent meeting at 10am, over at Ben Franklin Place the dedicated City United Way team will be holding their 'Pizza, Pledges & Artisan Fair'. Funds raised will go towards our City of Ottawa fund-raising goal for the United Way Campaign. Thursday afternoon is also my regular drop in time at the Britannia Woods Community House. Residents can drop by & say hello or chat with me about a problem they need help with. Thursday evening there will be not 1, not 2, not 3 but 4 Christmas parties to drop in to across Bay Ward & the City - my job is to make sure I don't eat at every one!
Friday morning I am joining the Annual Christmas Cheer Breakfast at the Westin Hotel at the United Way table. Tune in to the broadcast & hear just how amazing our community can be. Noon will see staff from across the city join us at City Hall for the annual holiday luncheon. This is a great tradition that brings together lots of city staff for a social holiday lunch who often only get to communicate by e-mail or telephone about work. Later Friday is set aside for meetings on strategic priorities on a variety of subjects and ends at 4:30 when Christine and I meet up with some good friends for coffee and conversation.
Saturday and Sunday are filled with Christmas events in our community and I will be making the rounds to pass along my wishes to all for a wonderful holiday.
So that’s a preview of just some of the things on this weeks calendar. As always please reach out to our office if we can help you with anything and let us know what’s going on in your Bay Ward neighbourhood!
