The City of Ottawa is sad tonight as we learned one of our great community leaders, Max Keeping has passed away.
I grew up as a child watching Max on the TV news. It was only when I got older that I realized he was so much more than a newsman. Many of the stories of struggle that Max reported on he didn't just report, he got involved in them. He got engaged and engaged others to help. From those facing health challenges, communities and neighbourhoods in need to of course, the kids - Max did so much for so many.
Tonight at City hall a forum was opened that will see our community step up to aid those looking for a better life here after fleeing their embattled home land in Syria. It was here that we learned of Max's passing. Across the several hundred here there was a collective gasp of sadness and a moment of silence where you could have heard a pin drop.
It's somehow fitting that as a community was once again rising up to help we learned together about Max.
Thank You Max - for everything you did, the lives you touched with your stories, your kindness and your compassion. So many are better off today because you helped them.
Rest in Peace.
